  11.      The format instructions that you follow are simple procedures to tell 
  12.      the computer that you have either one or two Winchester disk drives 
  13.      installed and prepares your operating system to recognize the Western 
  14.      Digital controller.  
  15.      
  16.      You will need to know the parameters of your hard disk drives.  As a 
  17.      convenience to you, we have included a list of the most common hard 
  18.      disk drives and their parameters.  To access this list, return to the 
  19.      previous menu.  If your drive is not listed, contact your drive 
  20.      manufacturer or consult your drive manual to determine drive type and 
  21.      parameters.
  22.                            TRANSLATION/NON-TRANSLATION
  23.      
  24.      The motherboard BIOS in most older IBM PC AT's or AT compatible 
  25.      systems do not recognize the 26 sector per track feature of RLL type 
  26.      drives.  If your hard disk drive has 4 heads and fewer than 663 
  27.      cylinders, you may select jumper settings to enable the translation 
  28.      mode of the controller card and install software using the 
  29.      instructions provided under the Software Instructions for Translation 
  30.      Mode.   If your drive has greater than 663 cylinders, you will need 
  31.      to use the Software Instructions for Non-Translation Mode.
  32.      
  33.      To format your hard disk drive, you may use one of several software 
  34.      programs.  The Advanced Diagnostics (or equivalent in AT 
  35.      compatibles), Disk Manager from Ontrack Computer Systems, or 
  36.      Speedstor 4.02 from Storage Dimensions.  Use of the programs depends 
  37.      on the controller configuration.  Configuring the controller to use 
  38.      the translation feature requires running the Advanced Diagnostics 
  39.      program, Setup.  Setup defines the drive type for the system and low 
  40.      level formats the drive.  Without translation, Advanced Diagnostics 
  41.      can low level format the drive, if the system BIOS recognizes the 26 
  42.      sector RLL format.  (Storage Dimensions' Speedstor 286 BIOS is a 
  43.      replacement set of BIOS ROMs for the AT system board.)  Run the DOS 
  44.      programs, FORMAT and FDISK, after performing the low level format, 
  45.      regardless of controller configuration.

  69.      Formatting hard disk drives with the non-translation operational mode 
  70.      requires a host system with a 26 sector BIOS.  If the system does not 
  71.      contain a 26 sector BIOS, Ontrack and Storage Dimensions produce 
  72.      programs to support the 26 sector RLL drives.  For further

  85.      The Disk Manager and Speedstor products are the only products that 
  86.      have been tested by Western Digital at this publication date.  Both 
  87.      work well, providing full usage of the RLL capacities.  However, 
  88.      these are not the only alternatives for removing system limitations.  
  89.      Contact your dealer for further information.

  98.      1.   Insert your system Advanced Diagnostic Diskette (or equivalent).

  100.      2.   Turn on power.

  102.      3.   Boot diagnostic and select Setup option.  After defining drive 
  103.      types, run System Checkout.  Enter 0 after the "Select the action 
  104.      desired" prompt.

  106.      4.   Select fixed disk option 17.

  108.      5.   Select the Format Menu from the Fixed Disk Diagnostic Menu.

  110.      6.   Unconditionally format the drive with the Format Selection Menu.

  112.      7.   Enter bad block in the Defect Entry table.

  114.      8.   Formatting begins.  After formatting the drive, press "Enter".  
  115.      Boot and operate the system normally.

  169.                                  Troubleshooting
  170.      
  171.      Problem:   1790 Disk 0 Error.
  172.      
  173.      Cause:     No low level format on hard disk.  Wrong drive type
  174.                 selected. Not enough drive power.  Bad cables. Improper
  175.                 drive selection or termination.
  176.      
  177.      Problem:   Drive does not partition.
  178.      
  179.      Cause:     Check drive types.  Note that drive types for the AT
  180.                 and AT-compatibles differ.

  182.      Problem:   "Error Reading Fixed Disk" appears when booting from
  183.                 hard drive.
  184.      
  185.      Cause:     DOS partition not active.

  200.      Problem:   Winchester activity LED continuously lit.
  201.      
  202.      Cause:     No problem.  Drive LED selected for latched mode.
  203.      
  204.      Problem:   For systems with two drives, both Winchester activity
  205.                 LEDs light at the same time.
  206.      
  207.      Cause:     Improper drive selection or termination. Inspect the 
  208.                 drive cables. If the data cables are straight, then set
  209.                 drive C's drive select switches for drive select 1 and
  210.                 drive D's drive select switches for drive select 2. If
  211.                 the data cables have a twist, set both drives' select
  212.                 switches for drive select 2. Consult your drive manuals
  213.                 or dealer for drive switch settings. Finally, under no
  214.                 circumstances, use twisted floppy cables for the
  215.                 Winchester drive. Floppy and Winchyester drive interface
  216.                 connections differ significantly.
  217.      
  218.      Problem:   Slow and inefficient operation.
  219.      
  220.      Cause:     The biggest culprit for this problem is an incorrect 
  221.                 interleave factor.  Therefore, some experimentation with
  222.                 the interleave factor may be necessary. (Refer to the
  223.                 format instructions for setting interleave factor).
  224.                 Interleave factors are very dependent on the host
  225.                 operating system and application.
  226.      
  227.      Problem:   Not getting full capacity from drive.
  228.      
  229.      Cause:     You may have an MFM type drive.  Consult your drive 
  230.                 manual.  The WD1003-RAH is designed for use with RLL
  231.                 type drives only.  DO NOT USE WITH MFM DRIVES.
  232.      
  233.      Problem:  Controller does not format a Seagate ST225 to 30 megabyte.
  234.      
  235.      Cause:     The ST225 is a 20 megabyte MFM drive.  The ST238 is a 30 
  236.                 megabyte RLL drive.  This is a good time to point out the 
  237.                 differences between RLL and Modified Frequency Modulation 
  238.                 (MFM) disk drives and controllers.  First, RLL equipment 
  239.                 is able to record 50% more data on the drive.  Second, RLl 
  240.                 drives must be physically formatted with 26 sectors 
  241.                 because of the greater data density.  DO NOT UNDER ANY 
  242.                 CIRCUMSTANCES CONNECT A RLL CONTROLLER TO AN MFM DRIVE.
  243.      
  244.                 RLL controllers physically format any attached drive into 
  245.                 26 sectors.  Therefore, the RLl controller squishes 26 
  246.                 sectors onto a drive designed for 17 sectors.  Squishing 
  247.                 the RLL data onto a MFM drive results in corrupted data.  
  248.                 Finally, the chip sets on RLL and MFM controllers 
  249.                 significantly differ as a result of the first and second 
  250.                 points.
